How to Visit a Musuem

Many are intimidated by museums. We shuffle from one object to another, afraid to pass anything by, talking in whispers or hushed voices. Many experts advice the visitor to relax. A museum is to be enjoyed after all. Here are a few tips to get the most of your museum trip or visit.

  1. Before you visit, try to find out something about its collections and exhibits. Try to get a brochure from the museum before you go, or research online. Even if the museums you are going to visit are in foreign countries, you can often get travel guides beforehand. Libraries also have books on hand that can help you decide what you want to see.
  2. Find out about parking.
  3. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes.
  4. If you want to videotape or take pictures, make sure the museum allows such practices before taking anything in.
  5. If you have no advance information, ask the people at the desk, what the museum is famous for.
  6. Many museums offer self-guided tours, with tapes or booklets stressing certain themes. You might want to take advantage of them.
  7. Once in the museum, follow your bent. Some people go quickly through the whole museum, then return to contemplate those objects or rooms that most appealed to them. Others go immediately to what interests them. Others start at the beginning and try to go through to the end. Do the museum at your own pace, in your own way. If you’ve been there before, try going through backward.
  8. Look at details through opera glasses so you can appreciate them better. Or draw them - drawing will help you focus your attention.
  9. Pay attention to the museum building itself - it, too, is often a work of art.
  10. Supervise your children so they will learn something and not disturb others.
  11. Don’t overdo. Plan to have lunch to break up museum visits.
  12. Relax. Enjoy yourself. Respond honestly to what you see. Don’t let a phantom expert keep you from connecting with the things that are right before your eyes.

Are Wii Kidding Ourselves?

The Nintendo Wii Fit was released to the public recently with much ballyhoo. If you haven’t seen the Nintendo Wii game system, it is the latest evolution in video game playing where players use the remote to mimic real-life actions such as a tennis forehand. The players’ physical actions are then played out on the screen.

The Wii Fit is a “game” that according to the Nintendo website can increase your fitness levels. “By playing Wii Fit a little every day, you, your friends, and your family can work towards personal goals of better health and fitness,” the site claims. While I have yet to use the game at all, I can say that I am highly skeptical that this will make a dent into America’s growing obesity problem.

The Wii Fit comes with a balance board that the player uses to interact with the game. When you first start the game, the Wii Fit assesses your balance - which is important in your overall health, but is usually not a concern to anyone who is not a senior citizen or recovering from injury.

It then moves on to perform the Body Test, which is more balance assessment, followed by the calculation of Body Mass Index (or BMI). BMI is a very flawed measure of one’s fitness, as it measures the ratio of one’s scale weight to one’s height. So, on the BMI scale, the following people are considered Overweight or Obese:

  • Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees
  • Tom Brady of the New England Patriots
  • Lance Armstrong of cycling fame
  • Arnold Schwarzenegger
  • Sylvester Stallone

See where I’m going with this? Scale weight does not account for the amount of lean body mass someone is carrying. That is why body fat percentage is the gold standard for measuring one’s fitness.

Also, measuring BMI on anyone under 19 is very inaccurate. This already has become an issue for Nintendo, as a 10-year old athletic British girl was assessed as being Fat by the game. Obesity experts jumped on Nintendo immediately, rightfully stating that the game could cause irreparable harm to a child’s body image. Nintendo has since added a disclaimer that the BMI feature is meant for adults only, but hasn’t taken the step of deactivating it in the game for child users.

The game goes on to calculate a Wii Fit Age for the user based on your balance test results, actual age, etc. Again, this is a very shaky measure of one’s fitness that could mislead people.

The Training section of the game is broken down into four sections: Yoga, Balance Games, Strength Training and Aerobics, all of which can be done without spending the $89.95 suggested retail price for Wii Fit.

Let’s break down the Strength Training section as an example of some of the flaws in this game. The first exercise is a Single Leg Extension, which is more of an exercise in balance than a strength training exercise. Also, leg extensions do not mimic a real life use of the leg, and the leg extension machine is perhaps one of the worst machines in the gym.

The next exercise is torso twists, which is more of a dynamic stretch than a strength building exercise, especially in the absence of any weighted bar or dumbbells. That is followed by the push-up and side plank. Now, I’m a big fan of both of these exercises, but they are not for the de-conditioned. Most men are not capable of doing pushups with correct form, and women usually start out with the modified push-up until they have the strength to do regular form.

The next exercise, jack-knifes, is for people who are advanced in their training. It violates one of the basic principles of fitness professionals around the world - never put a de-conditioned person on their back on the floor for anything. Lastly, the game makes the user perform lunges, which are great muscle builders. However, like stated before, you don’t need to buy a game system to do them.

Overall, I give Nintendo credit for trying to make a game that tries to get people to be more active, which is more than can be said for other video game manufacturers. However, this will not do anything in terms of chipping away at the American obesity problem. In fact, I’ll go out on a limb and say that the video game industry needs to follow the route of the tobacco and alcohol manufacturers, and state that excessive use of their product could lead to inactivity and obesity, rather than try to make a half-hearted effort at increasing American activity levels.

Rather than letting your kids play Wii Fit while you watch TV in the other room, here are some things that you can do together:

  • Go for a brisk walk
  • Group session with a personal trainer
  • Navigate a confidence course
  • Play catch with a football or baseball
  • Kick a soccer ball around
  • One-one-one basketball
  • Walk and play a par 3 golf course
  • Family yard work or snow shoveling!

You’ll save money on electricity and form stronger bonds with your kids as you increase your fitness levels together.

History of the M65 US Field Jacket

The M65 field jacket was first introduced to the U.S. military in 1965 (M-1965 field jacket), go figure. It replaced the M51 field jacket which was an improvement on the M-1943 field jacket. The first big test for the M-65 was the the Vietnam War. The M 65 served the U.S. military well especially in the Central Highlands of South Vietnam and keeping our soldiers warm during the cool weather conditions that came after monsoonal rains. After the war, When our soldiers came home. Many many of them continued wearing them as their every day jackets. Since this the M65 has become the most widely used military jacket. It has been widely copied and now can be bought at many sources including, military surplus and commercial companies.

When the jacket was first introduced it was only available in olive drab. Now it is available in many colors and patterns including; Australian Disruptive Pattern Camouflage, “chocolate-chip” desert camouflage, Universal Camouflage Pattern, Tigerstripe, black, navy blue, and Woodland camouflage.

The M65 field jacket’s popularity was helped by there many appearances in U.S., movies and tv shows. In many movies, homeless veterans are often shown wearing one of these classic jackets. Some notable appearances include; Arnold Schwarzenegger as The Terminator in the movie The Terminator, Robert De Niro as Travis Bickle in the movie Taxi Driver, Sylvester Stallone as John Rambo in the movie First Blood and as Rocky Balboa in Rock Balboa, and Adam Baldwin as Ricky Linderman in the movie My Bodyguard. The M65 Jacket also appears is some current TV shows which include; Jensen Ackles as Dean Winchester in the series Supernatural, Scott Patterson as Luke Danes in the series Gilmore Girls, and # Jason Lee as Earl Hickey in the series My Name is Earl.

My powerful bodybuilding techniques allow me to do that.

Bodybuilding is the act of putting on muscle by working out and shaping one’s diet to put on more muscle mass. Bodybuilding may be done for recreation, for personal betterment or as a competitive sport.

Training

Training at a high intensity too frequently also stimulates the central nervous system (CNS) and can result in a hyper-adrenergic state that interferes with sleep patterns. Training intensity and volume should be in line with what the kid can cope with easily and safely. Training natural has so many benefits it would take to many words to put in this article.

Training intensity doesn’t mean jack if you can’t consistently keep it up. This was accomplished by improved bodybuilding techniques, better nutrition and more effective equipment.

Muscle

Muscles need time to heal, once a week for directly hitting a muscle is fine. Muscles grow when muscle fibers are damaged and repair themselves following a workout. Muscles is a movement, it is our life.

Muscles are the ’slaves’ of the CNS, and when the CNS calls for a movement, it never calls in individual muscles separately. Muscle recovery can only happen in the presence of ample amino acids and the only source for amino acids is dietary protein. Muscles, tendons and ligaments tend to shorten over a period of time, which limits our range of motion and renders us more liable to injury when sudden stresses are placed on these structures. Muscle has one simple function — it contracts.

Muscle takes work, time, and dedication, more than most people are willing to devote. Muscle & Fitness becomes the official journal of the IFBB. The muscles are revealed through a combination of fat loss, oils, and tanning (or tanning lotions) which combined with lighting make the definition of the muscle fibres more distinct.

Fat

Fat is irrelevant for bodybuilders, although cholesterol is essential in the production of testosterone so make sure to eat as many animals as you can. Fats, sugars, anything you can shove down your throat. Fat can only be lost with a caloric deficit from a reduction in food intake, an increase in activity or ideally, a combination of both. Fat cells in the body elevate estrogen which can reduce your testosterone levels.

Bodybuilders

Bodybuilders such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lee Priest and Jay Cutler all started competing when they were teenagers. Bodybuilders seek out low-glycemic polysaccharides and other slowly-digesting carbohydrates, which release energy in a more stable fashion than high-glycemic sugars and starches. Bodybuilders usually require higher quality protein with a high BV rather than relying on protein such as soy, which is often avoided due to its estrogenic properties. This develops good bodybuilding technique and rituals.

Bodybuilders exist on a diet of protein to develop muscle, and have a skinny supermodel’s aversion to fat. Bodybuilders who over-train risk suffering injuries and immune system difficulties, and can neglect home, work and family life, according to Mr Smith… all caused by bad bodybuilding techniques. Bodybuilders also increase their electrolyte consumption (potassium and sodium) to reduce the risk of muscle cramps when on stage.

Bodybuilding as a sport is not athletic and should not be confused with lifting sports or strongman competitions. Bodybuilding is not a project that you work hard on for a set amount of time, finish, and then sit back and admire. Bodybuilding is an ongoing, lifelong process filled with ups and downs, triumphs and setbacks, peaks and recessions. Bodybuilding is the new name of the exercise now days.
